Friends of Wild Salmon Press Release following federal approval
Friends of Wild Salmon (FOWS) today warned the federal government and Enbridge that today’s approval of the Northern Gateway Project is meaningless. Gerald Amos, chair for the coalition, said "Enbridge and Stephen Harper have created unprecedented solidarity among residents of the Skeena, and in fact, all across our country. The project is dead, they know it, and whether the funeral is in the courts, or on the land, it’s dead”.
Des Nobels, a director of Friends of Wild Salmon commented that “There is no surprise here, the decision to support this project, regardless of its consequences, was made years ago by the Harper government. The entire process has been flawed from its inception.”
Nobels also said "This is a region sees its future in wild salmon, not oil pipelines. We need responsible and sustainable economic development in our communities, and the federal governments approach to development is threatened jobs, not creating jobs.”
Friends of Wild Salmon is a coalition of First Nations, community groups, and fishing organizations in northern B.C. and has worked on the Northern Gateway proposal since 1999.
