Town Council Supports Inquiry

Smithers council supports calls for a full federal, public inquiry of the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project.

“I think it’s warranted to go through a more intensive process with this,” councillor Lorne Benson said.

Council was originally approached during last month’s council meeting by the Office of the Wet’suwet’en and the Pembina Institute, with both parties showing concern over the proposed pipeline project and the environmental impact it would have.

“Do we want to shoulder the risk of the Enbridge pipeline?” Greg Brown, with the Pembina Institute had asked of council.

While three councillors opposed the motion, the majority ruled with a letter of support being sent to the federal government in support for a full public inquiry.
